Information on prices, technical details, consumption, performance, options and abs, how it's going and why buy the R 1250 GS

In summary

The GS is an icon: unmistakable appearance, extremely comfortable seat for both rider and passenger, generous boxer that picks up even from low revs. The power is 136 horsepower, the weight is felt: 249 kg which are a bearable hindrance in city use, but tiring when maneuvering from a standstill. Excellent aerodynamic protection and stability on the straight. The cruise control and heated grips are also comfortable.

The Dynamic ESA suspension adjusts automatically for use alone or with a passenger and luggage. The new BMW boxer is incredibly thirsty: at 120 km/h, on average, it travels over 19 km/l. The technology package is completed by the Connectivity system combined with the 6.5-inch color TFT display: in combination with the standard BMW Motorrad multi-controller, it allows the rider to access the bike and connectivity functions (telephone, entertainment and navigation). The price includes 5 years of roadside assistance.

How is it going

The variable timing boxer engine unleashes a sweetness of delivery at low frequencies never seen in the BMW "four valves", but also a wickedness at high frequencies worthy of a sports car. To be clear, the R 1250 GS picks up in sixth gear from less than 2,000 rpm without any problems, then pushes with the usual vigor at medium speed, but once the 5,000 rpm mark is exceeded, the rev counter needle shoots up to the red zone (which starts at around 9,000 rpm). It's not the most powerful of the large crossover engines, but it's certainly the most manageable and pleasant to use in all situations, in daily use and on the road: in our opinion it will convince an even wider clientele than the previous ones. The chassis manages the engine power well, indeed it shows off qualities that have not been evident so far. As always, just a few kilometers are enough to learn how to manage the 250 kg of the GS, which also in this version boasts a granite front end: at any pace, it follows the trajectories as if they were rails. But thanks to the low center of gravity, the BMW is also quick in changes of direction and great fun in guided tours. The Dynamic ESA suspensions are now perfectly tuned and support every driving style. Equally positive is the judgment on the braking system, powerful but always well-dosed.

But are EP radiator guards for for BMW R 1250 GS really necessary?

The simple answer is yes. EP radiator guards protect the R 1250 GS's dual radiators from road debris, allowing air to pass through to maintain the radiators' ability to cool the pumped coolant. Radiators have delicate aluminum cooling fins that bend easily, and misaligned fins can restrict cooling air, which can lead to overheating. The inner core of a radiator is also prone to being pitted by rocks and other debris that are thrown directly into the radiator, usually from another motorcycle or from traffic. Coolant leaks can cause rapid overheating, resulting in engine damage.
